84 Pounds of Yarn
House Mountain Yarn Co. is becoming more real by the moment! On Tuesday, we received our first shipment of yarn--84 pounds of it! (No wonder Ellie looks so happy!)
84 pounds of yarn--how epic is that? The yarn is worsted weight, and each skein is 100 grams--most yarn skeins are measured in grams--so at 453.6 grams in a pound, there are roughly 38,102 grams of yarn in those boxes, or about 381 skeins. 381 skeins multiplied by 219 yards per skein means that there are approximately 83,439 yards of yarn in those amazing boxes.
Because this is the United States of America and our standard unit of measurement for really long things is the football field, we need to imagine our 83,439 yards of magical fiber stretched out over football fields. According to the National Football Foundation, there are 774 college and university teams with a football program in the USA. If we assume that all of them have a football field, then we can go end to end with our yarn on each, as well as the 32 NFL team stadiums and still have 28 football fields left over (no, I'm not including end zones.) That's a boatload of yarn.
More importantly, what could those 83,439 yards make in terms of knitted garments? It could make approximately 53 women's size medium sweaters; 450 basic beanie hats, or 970 pairs of kids' mittens. That's a lot of warmth and comfort coming from one yarn shipment.
And now we know why Ellie is grinning.
