Charity Knitting & Crocheting

Our May and June Charity Knit project is knitted knockers! Join us for appetizers and drinks while Cindy Huber from the Roanoke knitted knockers program gives us an overview of her chapter’s activities. knitted knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. You will need an approved pattern and a skein of approved yarn (click here for the list of approved yarns), a US #4 or #5 set of DPNs or 24” circular, or a size G crochet hook. Free patterns will be available and any supplies purchased to start the project this evening will be 10% off. 

There is no fee but an RSVP is appreciated. Please send us an email to let us know you'll be there!

UNDER THE SEA

  • Teacher: Cathy McElhannon
  • Monday - Friday June 4 - 8
  • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • We will spend the week working on our needle-felting skills. Starting with a basic cookie cutter mammal, we will work up to 3D underwater creatures. In addition to learning how to needle-felt, students will dye wool and use basic sewing techniques to embellish their creations.
  • We’ll take a daily break mid-morning for a snack and a quick yoga session to stretch and re-energize.
  • Ages seven and older. Class size is limited to six students.
  • Class fee: $150.00
  • Supplies (student will keep) $15.00

FIBER CAMP

  • Teacher: Cathy McElhannon
  • Monday - Friday June 25 - 29
  • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • We will spend the week playing with fiber! We’ll make art and jewelry (if desired) with pompoms, tassels, yarn, and more. Students will learn basic weaving and will complete a masterpiece using basic drawing skills, a bit of hammering and string.
  • We’ll take a daily break mid-morning for a snack and a quick yoga session to stretch and re-energize.
  • Ages seven and older. Class size is limited to six students.

KNIT CAMP

  • Teacher: Ellie Boylan
  • Monday – Friday July 9 - 13
  • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • We will spend the week learning different knitting techniques including finger knitting and a fun tool the kids can take home to make i-cords. We’ll turn those i-cords into flowers or an octopus. We will use knitting needles to make headbands. We will also learn how to turn a t-shirt into a ball of yarn.
  • Ages eight to twelve.
  • Class size is limited to six students

CROCHET CAMP

  • Monday – Friday July 23 - 27
  • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • We will spend the week learning a basic crochet skills to make beaded bracelets. We will use old t-shirts to make our own yarn that we will turn into small bowls. We will finish the week making cute pom-pom animals.

Join us in beautiful Rockbridge County for a relaxing knitting retreat

 Friday, June 15- Sunday, June 17

Join us in scenic Rockbridge County, Virginia for a relaxing knitting retreat. Expand your knitting skills in a class taught by knitwear designer Laura Aylor, stretch out in a chair yoga class with Wendy Orrison of Center of Gravity Yoga, create an adorable needle-felted hare with our own Cathy McElhannon, and make new friends in a serene mountain setting.

Retreat Options**

Knitting retreat price includes all meals (2 breakfasts, 2 dinners, 1 lunch), plus refreshments through the day; knitting class and trunk show with designer Laura Aylor; Yoga for Knitters chair yoga class; Champagne Reception at House Mountain Yarn Co., Needle Felting Class, 10% discount on yarn throughout the weekend. Two levels of accommodations to choose from.

  • There are three cottages/studios next to the lodge that are still available as of April 4. Please call the lodge directly at 540-463-2593  to make a reservation. The cottages vary from $125-$140 per night. You can then choose the local retreat option above to reserve your spot at the retreat.

*The private rooms are on the second floor of the building, and the loft single beds are on the third floor. The sleeping accommodations at the lodge are NOT wheelchair accessible and you will have to climb stairs to reach them. The knitting class and all meals are on the ground level.

**After April 30, 2018, the retreat is non-refundable. We will reopen the slot and if someone else reserves it, we will refund the money to you.
